A.A.S. in Fire Protection Technology
Our program offers the theoretical and scientific knowledge to complement the hands-on fire training of volunteer and career fire fighters. The courses provide a broad background for students who are interested in working in related fields such as plant protection, insurance and government agencies. The general education courses enables students to improve their communication skills and to gain further understanding of the society in which they will be working. The only one of its kind in the Greater Capital Region of New York State, SCCC’s Fire Protection Technology degree offers courses that are taught by field experts in areas like Fire Prevention, Fire Investigation, Fire Codes and Enforcement, Fire Administration, Hazardous Materials, and Industrial Fire Protection. For the convenience of students that travel a substantial distance, volunteer at their local fire company, and/or work, SCCC’s Fire Protection Technology courses are scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday late in the afternoons and evenings. Students need to be on the SCCC campus just twice a week during a semester to maintain full-time status with 12 or more credits. Typical positions for which graduates may qualify are fire fighter, fire prevention inspector, codes enforcement officer, training technician, safety supervisor, safety representative, investigator, loss adjustor, and risk appraiser.
