SCCC and FIC Introduce the CNA Training Program

SCCC, the Family Investment Center and Glendale Nursing Home are partnering to provide a Certified Nurses Aide Training Program. This seven-week program is offered through a HUD grant secured by the Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority, and includes services from Catholic Charities and SCCC's Bridge Program, headed by Wendy Blake in the Continuing Education Department.

In addition, a Catholic Charities Social Worker will refer students to many local services, including the One Stop, the Washington Irving Educational Center, YWCA Children's Center, and the Boys and Girls Club of Schenectady, which includes After-School Enrichment programs such as "Advantage."

Students will attend practical class instruction from Monday first aidthrough Wednesday at the FIC, attend clinical practice on Thursdays at Glendale Nursing Home, and return to the FIC for class with Ms. Blake on Fridays, learning "soft skills," or skills that help them both in life and on the job.

The classroom instructor, Darlene Anapolis, a RN with a MS in Health Services, brings more than twenty years of nursing experience, including ten years of instruction. She recently headed a similar program for HVCC. Regina Bremser, RN, who comes to this class with over twenty years of nursing experience, provides on-site clinical supervision and instruction.

Because the class is grant-related, students must meet basic requirements to take the course, which are determined through FIC,Employment SCCC and Catholic Charities. The end-goal is to see our students find a position in the field, retain employment, and continue to attend school for a field-related degree.

This program will run 3-4 sessions a year during fall and spring semesters through 2005. Individuals can be referred to the class by calling Virginia Santiago, FIC Coordinator, at 374-1414, or 395-9230.
