Distance Learning
Summer On-Line Courses Expand

chartStudents' growing interest in distance learning has prompted Schenectady County Community College to increase our course offerings on the SUNY Learning Network (SLN). The support training for new online instructors and the creative approach to the development of new courses promise an exciting summer for learning. The Continuing Education Division is pleased to report that SCCC will offer 22 sections of on-line courses this Summer term. That is essentially double what we offered last year, and because on-line courses will be more than 20% of our total course offerings, there is sure to be an impact on the campus climate.

ComputerLast summer, although the College enjoyed high enrollments, there seemed to be fewer students on campus. That was, in fact, the case. As our on-line course offerings grow, student enrollments remain a constant, but the student population on campus decreases!

The on-campus benefits are that parking is not a problem and that the campus remains cleaner. The down side is that having fewer on-campus students impacts our Commons, where cafeteria staff find less to do each summer.

So why offer more on-line courses? It is simple:

StudentStudents want the courses. On-line courses do not require that trip to campus each morning or evening. They don't interfere with work responsibilities and, if someone offers you a day at the lake, you can go without skipping class! It is little wonder that on-line courses are the first to fill, and that if a student is requesting permission to enroll in a closed course, it is almost always an on-line course.
