Behind SCCC's Non-Credit
Computer Courses



         In 1994, Eileen Schoch found out the company that she worked for was closing its local office - she would soon be out of a job. She was faced with the very difficult question of what her future would entail. Because of her computer knowledge and expertise, the individuals involved in the exiting process her former company provided suggested that she start her own business. Strengthened by a wonderful support circle that included her husband and many friends, Eileen did just that. In the Fall of 1994, Eileen began operating her new business, B:>compatible, from her home in Scotia. She worked as a temp 3 days a week and began the process of building her business 2 days a week. Due to Eileen's diligence and hard work, B:>compatible very quickly became a full-time business and she soon needed to acquire additional help.

         In January of 1995, B:>compatible began it's 7 year relationship with SCCC. That Spring semester, three courses were offered through Continuing Education: Introduction to Windows 3.15, Introduction to Word Perfect, and Intermediate Word Perfect. From such a modest beginnings, B:>compatible has grown into the primary instructor of non-credit computer courses at SCCC. Today, offerings include courses such as Computer Survival I and Computer Survival II; MOUS certification courses in Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint; Introduction to Digital Photography; Introduction to Using Scanners; Macromedia: Dreamweaver (a web page development software); and many others. In total, B:>compatible is responsible for 20 different non-credit computer courses that reflect the consistently changing computer technology.

         Eileen asserts that SCCC feels "like I've come home." "I love teaching for SCCC" she states " It's the most rewarding thing I've ever done." She goes on to say that she feels that the computer classrooms in the new Stockade Building are absolutely wonderful. "The computer equipment for instructing at SCCC has kept up with technology, for example: LCD projectors, and it makes a big difference to the student. We're now able to show the students exactly what we're talking about". eileen schoch


         Over the years, B:>compatible has grown immensely and it's services have been utilized by colleges, National and Local businesses, city agencies, and numerous individuals. B:>compatible currently serves the New York Capital District Area; the Baltimore, Maryland metropolitan area; Manchester, New Hampshire and the surrounding areas; and the Central New Jersey area.
