Non-Credit's Creative Mixology Instructor, Steve Pelsoi, has a Secret Identity

When Steve Pelosi first began teaching Creative Mixology, our bartending course, at SCCC in February 2001 his first class consisted of 8 students. Over a year later, the course is consistently filled to capacity. Students have even asked to be placed on wait lists in order to participate in the course. What makes this course so popular? Besides the fact that these students are mixing alcohol and learning to work a variety of different bartending settings, part of the course's success must be Steve's love of his job - both teaching and bartending.

Steve first began bartending at a friend's restaurant in Caroga Lake. It was 1994 and he decided to bartend because he always thought it would be a fun job. "I felt that with as much time as I used to spend in bars, why not spend time there constructively and make money".

After spending many years learning the restaurant business, Steve decided that he wanted to begin teaching a topic he knew so well and enjoyed being a part of. Steve has stated that he "loves teaching at SCCC" in most part because of the "level and character of the students" he's been getting in his classes. "Teaching is a wonderful experience, but it can also be a nightmare." Steve goes on to say, "It is wonderful when you get students who want to be there and learn, which is what the environment at SCCC provides".

One would think that between working and teaching at SCCC that Steve would have very little time for outside activities. Despite his hectic schedule, Steve manages to make time for his secret identity - "Silly Billy" the Gorilla.

Steve began working with "Pocketz" the Clown (aka Lynn Carter) in June of 2000. His first clowning experience was with his "Silly Billy" the Gorilla character entertaining at a child's birthday party. Steve, in fact, has several secret identities. His other characters include "Hobo Dave" and "Santa Claus". Steve has worked side by side with the Power Puff Girls and has gone to International Clown Conventions where he has met clowns from all over the world.

Steve enjoys being a clown. He states that it enables him to focus on others and make them happy, which in turn makes him happy. Steve goes on to say if he support himself on just money made from clowning, he would - BUT - he would still teach at SCCC!
