Growth and Change in the Tier Program

Operating since the Fall of 2000, the Tier One Program at SCCC works in partnership with the United States Army and Air Force. More than 20 recruiting stations in the greater Capital District now refer potential enlistees for GED preparation or Adult Education. Traditional core subjects of mathematics, reading comprehension and writing skills have always been at the heart of the program.

In conjunction with our full time instructor, Doug MacDonald (left), Terri has developed a thematic teaching approach which integrates content from Social Studies and Science with reading and math skills. This approach has not only been more interactive but has allowed for multi-faceted lessons which address several skill and content areas at a time.

Tier 1 StudentsPerhaps you have wandered the halls on the 3rd floor of Elston over the past several months and noticed some seemingly bizarre behavior. What ARE the Tier students doing rolling toilet paper down the hall? They actually are not causing trouble but rather studying a scale model of our solar system utilizing a visual representation of the varied and enormous distances in space. In addition to being a great hands-on exercise, this lesson included a peer teaching element where two graduating students prepared and presented a portion of the material. The lesson culminated with an online scavenger hunt to locate places in the solar system based on pictures and written clues.

Terri teaches these new components of the Tier Program on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Don't be surprised if you find the Tier students building cars out of foam or competing to create the tallest balloon tower. We assure you it is all in the name of education!
