Mr. Miller served as Founder, Music Director and
Conductor
of the CRWE from its inception in 1994. At the end of the 2002-2003
season he stepped
down as principal conductor but continued on as Music
Director
and
principal cornetist, conducting from time to time. At the end
of
the 2005-2006 season he stepped down as Music Director.
Mr. Miller
has been performing in
the Capital Region for some forty
years, as a trumpet and cornet player. His early training on cornet was
provided by his father, Christopher Miller, who, while in addition to
being a fine cornetist, was also the conductor of the Mechanicville
City Band for 33 years. It was as solo cornetist in this band, under
his father’s direction, that Joe Miller learned to love
concert
band
music.
Mr. Miller worked as an
engineer for several years, but later
switched to his first love, music education. He subsequently taught in
several local school districts, retiring from the
Shenendehowa
School District where, as high school band director, he developed an
outstanding concert band and wind ensemble program. It was the
combination of the early performance exposure with band music, and the
teaching experience in developing school musicians, that planted the
seed for the formation of the CRWE.
