"In life there are sometimes memorable epiphanies that occasionally shed light into corners of our lives. When I went to Schenectady to appear with the Empire Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bill Meckley, the bright light of one of these epiphanies was awaiting my arrival within the embodiment of that wonderful orchestra. Their performance was dense with talent and spirit... and anticipation, a necessary element in jazz. They sent music out into the medium of the air mercifully searching out waiting ears and hearts that were completely fulfilled... including my own. Would we had more like them." - Benny Golson

In addition to its regular performances at SCCC, the EJO has presented concerts at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), Union College, and other venues as visiting artists.

The EJO's CD Live and Kickin' has been featured on the Public Radio International program "Jazz After Hours" hosted by Jim Wilke. This CD includes the premier recording of acclaimed composer Lennie Niehaus' "A Tribute to Bird" featuring guest artist Mark Vinci on alto saxophone.

Recorded during the orchestra's celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Duke Ellington, the CD features guest artists Nick Brignola on baritone saxophone, and Leo Russo, tenor saxophone. This recording has been featured on "The American Sound" program of WMHT-FM, as well as on PRI's "Jazz After Hours". The band's third CD, Anniversary, was released in 2003 and features music ranging from 1931 by Don Redman to contemporary works by Frank Zappa.

Music Director William Meckley serves as Chair and Professor in the Department of Music at SCCC. He holds the Doctor of Philosphy degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied advanced jazz conducting with Rayburn Wright.
