Schenectady County Community College to Hold Inauguration of Sixth President Today

Dr. Quintin B. Bullock, President Schenectady County Community College

The Schenectady County Community College Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the College will be holding an Inauguration ceremony for Dr. Quintin B. Bullock on Friday, April 30, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Proctors. Dr. Bullock is the sixth President of SCCC which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

The Inauguration ceremony will include remarks by Susan E. Savage, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature, Brian U. Stratton, Mayor of Schenectady, Congressman Paul D. Tonko, Dr. Nancy Zimpher, SUNY Chancellor, and Dr. Dennis Golladay, SUNY Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges.

NEW----As part of the event, a representative from GE will present a major donation to Dr. Bullock to support exciting new technology related initiatives at the College. This presentation will take place at the conclusion of the formal inauguration program.

Also, the College will award an Honorary Associate’s Degree to Malinda Myers who, in the mid-1960s, was Chair of the Community College Study Committee which recommended a community college be established in Schenectady County.

In addition to the College’s students, faculty, staff and administrators, participants in the program will also include community leaders, delegates from other SUNY colleges and universities, private institutions and the Schenectady City Police Department.

“This is a celebration of our entire community,” said Denise Murphy McGraw, Chairwoman of the SCCC Board of Trustees. “Dr. Bullock will launch SCCC’s next chapter in our great history.”

Since Dr. Bullock joined SCCC on July 1, 2009, he has:

  • led the development of a new College Mission,
  • led the development of a College Vision,
  • developed a new organizational structure for the College,
  • established and strengthened partnerships with local business and industry and four-year colleges and universities,
  • strengthened collaboration of area community colleges to develop a coordinated curriculum to meet emerging workforce needs,
  • launched development of new programs in Alternative Energy Systems and Battery Storage – two cutting edge employment areas,
  • expanded the campus into downtown Schenectady with the new Kindl Building for Workforce Development,
  • found a home for the Men’s Basketball Team in the new City Center facility,
  • increased County aid to the College by $100,000,
  • secured $150,000 from the County to support 201 State Street renovation,
  • led the development of a Smart Scholars Early College High School with Schenectady City Schools that will open September 1, 2010, and
  • expanded the University High School program offerings with regional high schools.

Additionally, he is also

  • leading the planning efforts for student housing,
  • leading the development of a comprehensive strategic plan, and
  • leading the planning and redesign for a new music wing.

A longtime educator, he has amassed a successful teaching record and has taught as an adjunct professor at Houston Community College in Houston, Texas, Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y., and Tidewater Community College and the Graduate School of Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

Dr. Bullock holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center: Dental Branch in Houston, Texas, and he earned a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Med from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. In addition, he completed post-doctoral work at the Eastman Dental Center and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y.

Dr. Bullock’s leadership training includes the Executive Leadership Institute sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College System, the Lakin Institute, the American Association for Community Colleges Future Leaders Program, the Wharton/IRHE Program in Higher Education, the Commonwealth of Virginia Lead Virginia Program, and the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents. He is the recipient of numerous distinguished awards and is very active in college and community programs.
