Library services: Instruction & orientation

Librarians teach both Instruction and Orientation sessions, upon faculty request.
About library instruction

Instruction is appropriate for classes that are working on research assignments.
Instruction is most successful when it’s scheduled to occur early on in the research process.
The Librarian working with your class will need 2 weeks advance notice and a copy of the assignment your students are working on to prepare for your class.
Librarians incorporate active learning techniques and hands-on activities into instruction sessions whenever possible.
Instruction sessions typically last the entire 50 or 75-minute class period.
A typical instruction session may address a combination of the following items:
- Using library tools to find books, articles and other sources of information
- Evaluating information
- Citing sources

About library orientation

Orientation is appropriate for classes or groups who are not working on research assignments, but want an introduction to the library.
A typical orientation session may address a combination of the following items:
- Where things are in the library
- What services are offered in the library
- Library vocabulary
