Librarians teach both Instruction and Orientation sessions, upon faculty request.
About library instruction
- Instruction is appropriate for classes that are working on research assignments.
- Instruction is most successful when it’s scheduled to occur early on in the research process.
- The Librarian working with your class will need 2 weeks advance notice and a copy of the assignment your students are working on to prepare for your class.
- Librarians incorporate active learning techniques and hands-on activities into instruction sessions whenever possible.
- Instruction sessions typically last the entire 50 or 75-minute class period.
- A typical instruction session may address a combination of the following items:
- Using library tools to find books, articles and other sources of information
- Evaluating information
- Citing sources
About library orientation
- Orientation is appropriate for classes or groups who are not working on research assignments, but want an introduction to the library.
- A typical orientation session may address a combination of the following items:
- Where things are in the library
- What services are offered in the library
- Library vocabulary
To schedule an Instruction or Orientation session, please contact Carrie Laier or stop by the Reference Desk in the library.
