library assignments

Why should I give my class a library assignment?

Establish students' familiarity with the library

  • Library assignments introduce students to the library and familiarize them with library resources, services and vocabulary.
Teach research skills
  • Students can learn specifics, such as finding a book on our online catalog, and locating a journal article. Students can also learn about the research process, and how to go about defining a topic for research and identifying appropriate resources for the topic.
Teach critical thinking skills
  • Students will learn critical thinking skills involved in evaluating information sources for validity, authority, accuracy and usefulness. Students will learn to choose sources that best suit their informational needs.
Promote learning outside of the classroom
  • Students will have the opportunity to learn more in-depth information about a specific subject or topic.
General Education / Information management (Information Literacy)
  • You will be helping your students to be Information Literate, and in doing so, will be complying with both the SUNY General Education Requirements which include the component Information Management (Information Literacy) and the Information Literacy Competency Standards set forth by the ACRL, and adopted by the SUNY Council of Library Directors.
