Mr. Tanner is an MLA Gastronomy and Food Studies candidate at Boston University and has spent much of his research on the effects of politics on the diets of 18th-19th century America and France. He is currently a Faculty member in the SCCC Hotel, Culinary Arts, and Tourism Department. He also blogs at http://www.dailygazette.com/weblogs/gastronomic-inspirations/. Friday, November 12, 2010

Erica Knuckles presents, Dueling Masculinities: Gender as Drama During the Seven Years’ War in Albany, 7:00 p.m., Stockade Building, Room 101. Free. At the dawn of the Seven Years’ War in America, Albany was a lively colonial city that retained strong ties to its Dutch beginnings despite its status as a piece of the vast British Empire. As the conflict progressed, Albany’s role became central to the war effort and the first major wave of British citizens, members of the British Army’s rank-and-file, arrived at their new headquarters. By examining primary sources ranging from art to archaeology, Erica Knuckles, a doctoral candidate at the University at Albany and interpreter at the Crailo State Historic Site in Rensselaer, N.Y., will explore the encounters that occurred between the leading men of Albany, translators of a unique New World Dutch culture, and their counterparts within the British Army.
