Before returning to SUNY Schenectady County Community College as the purchaser for the Culinary Arts program, John O’Connell has had an adventurous thirty-year career in the hospitality industry. John has held senior management positions at independently owned and operated restaurants, hotels, regional chain restaurants, and contract food service operations including, Turf Hotels, Chartwell’s K-12, Business and Industry, and Higher Education divisions. John has been the professional faculty advisor on multiple Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes internship trips with up to 100 students per visit, and the 2008 Ryder Cup. John has continued to work in industry for Sodexo at the University of Albany, and Mazzone Hospitality/Restaurant Associates. As a full time instructor, John’s vast experiences with business and diversity allows him to relate and translate his experience to the classroom environment. John’s volunteer work includes working with The American Heart Association’s Heart Ball, Capital District Hospice, and Kids Café in Albany.

John is the 2023 recipient of State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Service to the College.
